4. Cervical Spine and Shoulder Muscular Rehabilitation

In many cases there will be wasting (atrophy) of the muscles and ligaments that are responsible for holding the head perpendicular to the cervical spine (E.g. trapezius, sub-occipital muscles and ligaments, sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, other deep cervical muscles) and the leveator scapula. Thus a program should be implemented to rebuild and rehabilitate the muscles affected by this atrophy, in particular those involved in holding up the head. Wasted cervical muscles are responsible for ongoing complications in many people who have experienced whiplash or other head/neck related injuries. If this atrophy is left unattended healing will take much longer and may in fact hinder maintenance of corrections made by the other professionals.
