My Brief Story
Brief Story:  Our journey with Tourette’s Syndrome and Upper Cervical Chiropractic began almost two years ago on the 4th of July. While attending a friend’s birthday party, my oldest child, Hunter, was swinging when another child drove a motorized car into him. He was hit in the back, bounced off, and was then hit in the back of the head. I know how important the health of the spine is, and took him the very next day to a traditional chiropractor who checked his back, but unfortunately did not have him lie down to check his neck. He said he looked fine, and home we went. A few weeks later he began to start to look as though he was straining to see, and had his eyebrows very tense much of the time and would blink, well, more like close his eyes tight quickly. Soon thereafter, he began to open his mouth very wide, which is called mouth stretching. Because I know that people with TMJ tend to do that, and I hurt in that area when I am out of alignment, I took him back to the chiropractor. He used an activator on a couple places, and we went home. He continued with his symptoms, and my husband took him back a couple of days later. This was the first time that the doctor laid him down to check his neck. He said that his atlas/C1 was off so much that it was like his head was on crooked, and he adjusted his neck. His symptoms were increasing in frequency as well as in how many different tics he had. He had approximately twelve different tics. They were mostly facial, but he had a couple vocal, as well as a couple larger movements with his head and arms. We took him again to the chiropractor, he was out of alignment again only 2 days later. After observing Hunter, he was the first to mention Tourette’s Syndrome, and that we might want to take him to the pediatrician.
That comment devastated my husband and me, and with it now Labor Day weekend, I spent several days crying, praying, and researching all I could on the internet about Tourette’s Syndrome. I was able to identify with much of what I read, and saw many times that a head injury could trigger Tourette’s. The medications and their side effects frightened me, yet Hunter had gotten so bad, his tics at times coming on every second, that I was afraid of the other children making fun of him at school. I searched and searched and kept coming up with medical case studies where upper cervical chiropractic had helped children with Tourette’s become symptom free. I do have to give credit to www.upcspine.com. I knew nothing about upper cervical chiropractic before this website, and the man that has created it has such a powerful testimony as to how it helped him when legions of specialists had been unable to help him after a sports accident.
We soon took Hunter to the pediatrician, who took X-rays of Hunter’s neck, and said he was fine. I told him about taking Hunter to a chiropractor, and he berated me. He said that his tics might be the temporary habit of a 5 year old, but he also referred us to a pediatric neurologist at Children’s Hospital. It would take us approximately a month to get in to see the doctor there, and I was determined to do all I could before seeing her since I was expecting medication to be prescribed. I wanted to fix what was causing his problems, and not have his symptoms covered up with medication, and a misaligned spine left untreated. After much prayer, I decided to check into Brooks Spinal Care after finding them among many Tulsa area chiropractors on the www.upcspine.com website.
We drove 3 hours to Tulsa two weeks after hearing the word, “Tourette’s”. Dr. Brooks was wonderful, and very patient explaining things to me. He was also very fun and loving to my boys who were a bit active after that long drive. He was very hopeful that he could help Hunter. He said that it would take 120 days for his nerves to heal, so it could take until January to know if this was helping Hunter’s tics. Hunter had an adjustment the first day, and when we went back three days later, he was still in alignment. In about three weeks his tics were about 95% gone, and those he had were not noticed by anyone but his father and me. One adjustment, and we were so grateful and amazed.
A week later, we had our appointment with the pediatric neurologist on Thursday and Dr. Brooks on Friday. Hunter’s tics were suddenly increasing a little, and I was nervous that the adjustment had not helped like I thought since Tourette’s websites mention that tics can come and go. I was nervous that I would be chastised for taking him to a chiropractor (like the pediatrician did) and that medication would be pushed. We went to his appointment, and things went very well. She was very nice, and said that medication would only be prescribed if I felt it was necessary. The next morning I got Hunter in the car to take him to see Dr. Brooks, and again felt uneasy. I was worried that he was still in alignment, and the reduction in tics was temporary and unrelated to his adjustment. We went to our appointment with Dr. Brooks, and Hunter was out of alignment. I was so happy, because it proved that the previous adjustment had helped, and that his little body was just showing me that he needed another one. We get excited when his body holds an adjustment, and he has as long as 2 months. Now almost two years later, we continue to drive up every 4-8 weeks to get checked out, and currently have our entire family under his care.
