My Brief Story
Brief Story:  Let’s Play Ball !!!

On my first visit, I asked the doc if I would be able to play softball again! I was just kidding, because I could hardly get out of bed that morning…much less play ball. But secretly, I wanted to feel the joy of getting behind the plate, standing on the pitcher’s mound and even running the bases again. I could always hope!

I had excruciating pain in the small of my back, it was the worst part, but I also had neck and shoulder pain on that first visit. I had suffered for years, most of my life. When I was 20 years old, I lost a good job opportunity after the medical exam because of the condition of my back. So here I am, a few years later and even though I was on pain pills, I was still in pain. Pain that kept me down.

A bout three years ago, I went to see a doctor in Ft. Smith who said I would have to have four fusions. About that time, I saw an ad for the Texas Back Institute and went to see if they could help. They told me I would only need two fusions, but I would never be able to play golf or softball again. They also told me to expect only 50% pain reduction. That wasn’t good enough for me to risk the surgery. Then about a year ago, as things got worse, I went back to the Texas Back Institute and they said they wouldn’t be able to help me. So I gave up on it.

Mary Whitmire, a really great friend, had been a patient at Brooks Spinal Care for a few years and the first time I came with her for an appointment, I told her she was wasting her time and money. But the next time in August 2002, that we took the trip from Roland. OK, I decided to talk to the doctor and see if he could do anything to help me. He said he could. So I skeptically made the decision and they took care of me that day. After the first correction, I still wasn’t convinced. Dr. Brooks said he would see me in 30 days. So I got checked in 30 days on September 3, and needed another correction.. The pain had been terrible the day before my second visit. Then again in 30 days he corrected me. That’s when things started to change. And within a few months and a few visits, I was really pleased with the progress.

It’s been 7 months now, and last weekend, I played 5 games of softball on Friday night and Saturday. I batted 15 times; walked 2, had 12 hits and 1 out. I actually ran the bases. I didn’t just trot them. I pitched most of the games and on the last game I switched to play outfield!

My biggest hope was to be able to play softball. Now that I’m back in the game, I’ll proudly tell folks how much Dr. Brooks has helped me recover from my back pain, without surgery or medications. I guess Mary wasn’t wasting her time or money…
