Article Title Parkinson's disease:IUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic Management of Ten Parkinson's disease Patients
Author Erin Elster, D.C.
Main Condition/ Disease  Parkinson's disease
Source Today's Chiropractic, July-August 2000
Summary According to Elster more than 500,000 Americans suffer from Parkinson's disease. PD often starts with a tremor in one hand on one side of the body and progresses to a stage where fine motor skills are affected. Medications and surgery may help to temporarily control symptoms, but neither stops nor reverses the degeneration of the substantia nigra and the resultant depletion of dopamine. Elster, an upper cervical chiropractor, hypothesizes that upper cervical chiropractic care can result in a stimulation of improvement and/or reversal of Parkinson's symptoms. She located 10 PD patients who had been diagnosed with PD by their neurologist. This report by Elster summarizes results for the 10 cases. According to the author 9 out of the 10 PD patients could recall head or neck trauma prior to PD onset. Following upper cervical chiropractic care utilizing precision upper cervical x-ray analysis, paraspinal infrared imaging and knee chest upper cervical adjustments 8 out of 10 patients noted improvements within the first 30 days or chiropractic care, reported increased energy level and sleep, showed a decrease in spinal pain and rigidity. Further, according to Elster five patients had better balance, more upright posture, more fluid walking, improved hand agility, clearer speech, improved facial expression, better strength and other improvements. 60% of patients showed overall improvements ranging from 21% to 43% after 3 months of care. It's important to note that head and/or neck trauma is often associated with onset of symptoms in various diseases like PD, MS, ALS, ADHD and so on. Could it not be that an upper cervical spine injury as Elster suggests is the precipitating event in many diseases? I have no doubt that this is the case, and any scientist who does not investigate this possibility may well be missing the exact cause of most diseases. More research is required.
