Stop Press: Date 21-sep-2004 Story The Elusive Vaccine Author Richard Horton Main Condition/ Disease  AIDS; Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Source Australian Financial Review, 17th Sept 2004, 'Review Section'; Pages 1,2 and 10 Summary This is an article by physician Horton about the research being carried out into AIDS. The story refers to 23 years of research, 20 million deaths and $billions spent on research but no result yet and no vaccine! My Letter to the Editor: What would Dr Horton say if a small randomised, controlled clinical trial was carried out on two patient groups, each with 5 patients? The regular group was given a pharmaceutical, and for the control group a placebo. This is from the actual research paper. ”The results are quite remarkable. The control group experienced a 7.96% decrease in CD4 cell levels and the adjusted group a 48% increase in CD4 cell levels.” 48% increase over a 6 month period in CD4 cell levels!!! Would governments and others put resources behind such a drug to check it out further? I think YES would be the answer. Oops.. Sorry I fibbed. It wasn’t a pharmaceutical but an alternative therapy! Would people be interested now? I think not. Why? Because there’s no money in non-drug solutions. The study concluded that “it would be desirable to carry out follow up studies with far larger groups in an attempt to establish both a link between the nervous system, immune system and the therapy used.” I asked the author what happened to the larger study. Answer: No money, no resources. Why? It’s an alternative therapy and no-one is interested. Please be aware also that this same therapy is seeing dramatic improvements in other diseases e.g. Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis and many other afflictions. Apart from some recent papers pointing to this therapy as maybe being beneficial, I have a friend with MS who has improved dramatically and has been trying to get the MS society interested in the therapy. No luck as yet. Prejudice runs deep against this therapy. One would think patient interests would be placed above all others. Sadly this is not the case. Interested?
